There were 2.4 terawatts of solar PV generating electricity around the world at the end of 2025 – enough to power more than one billion homes. While it took nearly 70 years to reach the first terawatt, it took just two for the second – such is the pace of the technology’s expansion that the International Energy Agency believes it will account for 80% of the 4,600 gigawatts of renewable energy deployed between 2025 and 2030.
