When organic material is sent to landfill, it breaks down without access to oxygen and creates short-lived climate pollutants like methane, a super pollutant considered 85x more potent than carbon dioxide. Organic waste in landfills emits 20% of California’s methane emissions. To address this, California is implementing statewide organic waste recycling and surplus food recovery.
