What the Feds Say About Biobased Plastics and Industry’s Thoughts

Should all certified biobased plastics be counted as compostable? The answer depends on who is asked. The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) says no. In late January, the Board reasserted its longstanding position that “synthetic compostables” are generally unacceptable feedstock for organic farming—shooting down a Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) petition to reverse this rule.
