A good recycling rule of thumb: EMPTY, CLEAN, and DRY. Removing food waste and other liquid debris from recyclables prevents contamination of other recyclables in the collection truck and at the recycling processing center. One food-covered can or bottle can contaminate an entire bin of otherwise perfectly recyclable items. Plus, clean recyclables will have little or no odor and are less likely to attract bugs or rodents to your carts.
